Image
MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT WESTWORLD SEASON 1 AND A HOST OF OTHER MOVIES AND BOOKS, SO – Thee has’t been did warn, Thee may Proce’d !! FOOLISHNESS, THY NAMETH IS HUMANITY “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm” The First of the three laws of Robotics by Isaac Asimov ( https://www.auburn.edu/~vestmon/robotics.html ) is nothing but a mirage in Westworld, an HBO series written and partly directed by Jonathan Nolan. Westworld tells the story of an eponymous theme park based on the Wild West where the visitors/guests interact with androids who look, feel and behave exactly like humans across multiple story-lines or activities. As we sink deeper into the quagmire of a plot, we realize that it takes just a few lines of altered code to make Artificial Intelligence, well, really intelligent. Westworld is in more ways than one a mirror to human society and civilization (if we can call it that anymore in

HAIDER, BEYOND RATINGS: THE STYLE AND SUBSTANCE OF VISHAL BHARDWAJ

HAIDER BEYOND RATINGS: THE STYLE AND SUBSTANCE OF VISHAL BHARDWAJ ****WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD**** During the opening moments of the movie, Tabu’s husband mockingly touches his angry and scared wife’s face and jokes “Uff.. Aag lag jaayegi Ghar mein”. Minutes later, we see the same home being blown off and burnt to the ground. It is one of the most masterful opening sequences in the history of Indian cinema as it perfectly juxtaposes the story of a household with that of the Kashmir conflict. Ghazala(representing Kashmir herself) in an uneasy marriage with Hilal (India) turns to a close but untrustworthy Khurram (Pakistan) who as usual double crosses and causes unwarranted destruction of the household. In this entire fracas, it is Haider (representing the people of Kashmir) who ultimately suffers the most. The scene where he comes back to his now-in-shambles home (the current state of affairs in Kashmir) and reminisces his growing-up years in a happy &

NOT JUST A MOVIE REVIEW!!

NOT JUST A MOVIE REVIEW!! I saw the movie CLUB 60 today and it was a surprisingly pleasant and enjoyable experience!! I basically went for the movie as it is the last movie in which the late Farooque Shaikh has acted and the fact there is still a show of a not –much-talked-about movie in the theatre five weeks after its release!! Based on the title and starcast featuring some of the finest Indian actors, I had thought it would be a movie about grappling with the problems of old age!! But, in fact, it turned out to be a movie “FOR ALL AGES” in the real sense of the word!! The plotline of the movie is deceptively simple on paper – An elderly married couple, both doctors, Farooque Shaikh as Tariq, a neurosurgeon and Sarika as Saira (looking simply beautiful… I bet she can give her own daughter Shruti Hassan a run for her money even now) shift from Pune to Mumbai after the loss of their young son in a shootout killing in USA. The couple is devastated but the mother

THE LUNCHBOX – A BEAUTIFUL SLICE OF LIFE When I came to know that The Lunchbox was going to release over here in Latur, I was literally over the moon as such (read sensible) movies usually don’t see the light of the day over here. I saw the movie on Friday itself as I was super excited about the movie since watching the trailer a couple of months back. And it was not just a movie…. It was a beautiful experience. I came out of the movie hall smiling in a state of unadulterated happiness…. Nirmal Anand,   if I may say so. The movie showed human emotions and relationships in the background of Mumbai city life in such a subtle and underscored way…. It was as if the characters were not just talking to each other but to me as well. The acting by all the three lead characters… Irrfan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui is top notch and so natural… it’s as if we are observing our next door neighbours… or office colleagues. But the highlight of the movie is that all three
Lourdes High School 2K Batch Reunion 1 st September 2013 Dr. Omkar Halwai When Benjamin called me a few days back and asked me to write this piece, I said Yes but to be very honest I had no clue where to start…  I was like… kitna time ho gaya school chhod ke yaar…. Ab main kaha se shuru karoon!!! I was in a state of limbo for a few days.. but then the original thought struck me again….Kitna Time??? and it made me realize something. Friends, most of us are meeting after 13 long years… most of us are on the doorstep of turning 30…. But I realized that still we have spent 14-15 years i.e. more than half of our life in our Lourdes… 7 hours a day five days a week … Lourdes had been our second Home. Right from the time most of us took reluctant toddler steps through our school gates holding on to our parents hands crying desperately  “Mummyyyyyy, main nahi jaaonga/jaoongi”  till the day we passed our SSC exams into an unknown  but exciting future, Lourdes saw us all throug
